Wandering through Berlin, we can find everywhere traces of the king who shaped the city into the renowned metropolis we adore today, Friedrich the Great.
Despite Frederick’s military role, he preferred the company of intellectuals and indulged in the arts. Therefore, he’d rejoice in Berlin’s creative boom, with numerous artistic productions and a plethora of museums, theaters, music venues, stages, and cinemas.
Of course, think cinema, think Hollywood. However, little known is that Berlin hosted the first commercial film screening for a paying audience. It was in 1895! Because Max and Emil Skladanowsky introduced the Bioscop, precursor to modern projectors, at the Varieté Wintergarden. By the way, this venue is one of our upcoming visits.
THE ZOO PALAST
Today, our journey leads to the epitome of glamour and movies in Berlin – the Zoo Palast. Standing on historic ground, it held screenings since 1915. For example, Fritz Lang’s masterpiece Metropolis also premiered here in 1927. Back then the house even had its ballet and orchestra.
The “good old days”… when people still dressed up to go to the cinema (hence movie “theater”) rather than stream on the couch with chips and sweatpants. All good, but imagine the glamor that was lived here back then.
Unfortunately, like almost everything in Berlin, the bombing in wartime also claimed the Palasttheater. However, in 1957, the new Zoo Palast emerged. As if this were a magical place, the new cinema quickly became a meeting point for the creative and beautiful. So, the Berlinale Film Festival attracted stars from all over the world to the house and to this day it is the city’s premiere cinema. Here is just a small excerpt of the premieres that we were able to experience at the Zoo Palast.

Besides, the house became a second home for us. Because several times a week, sometimes several times a day, we were able to experience press screenings of the latest films here to report on them.
The Zoo Palast is beyond conventional, with warmth and charm. Each hall boasts unique designs and diverse lighting moods. First and foremost, the core team, led by the amiable Sven and the adept Andreas, adds the perfect touch.
At the Zoo Palast, you feel welcome and at home. More than commerce, it’s about emotions, a love for film, joy, and happiness. Visiting Berlin? Seize the opportunity, to attend a screening at the Zoo Palast – a unique cinematic experience awaits.
Yet, the title of the most beautiful film theaters in Berlin is shared with another enchanting cinema. Stay tuned for more in a few days.
