At the national museum KOMMANDØRGÅRDEN in RØMØ, the V-GUIDES travel back in time and the lives of people in the 17th and 18th centuries. They not only admire the house and its wonderful view but also the old WHALE SKELETON in THE BARN. Of course, they take the opportunity here to sunbathe on the RØMØ BEACH and have fun with WIND- AND KITESURFING or with a CANOE TRIP.
IN THE OLDEST TOWN IN DENMARK, RIBE, the girls not only experience the charming and vibrant ambiance and the town’s 1300-year-old history but the unique mix of HISTORY AND ART. The friends stroll through the STREETS and browse through the beautiful little SHOPS. Here, they talk to the operators and vendors to learn more about all there is to discover and buy here. Stops in the CAFÉS AND RESTAURANTS are of course part of the program.
When visiting THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY from the year 1200 built of Rhenish tuff stone with later Gothic changes and additions made in brick, the V-GUIDES learn that Ribe is not only Denmark’s oldest town but that DENMARK’S OLDEST CATHEDRAL is also located here.
Even if one tower collapsed already in 1283, the girls can still enjoy the view from the 52-meter-high CATHEDRAL’S COMMONER’S TOWER built in the year 1300. The V-GUIDES also find the CATHEDRAL MUSEUM here, where they learn a lot about the architectural history of the Cathedral and the story about the religious life in Denmark.
A stop at the ANSGAR SCULPTURE AT RIBE CATHEDRAL makes it clear that religion has always been shaped by special people. The V-GUIDES learn that Ansgar was the missionary bishop who built the first Danish church, precisely in Ribe around the year 860, on the highest point in the area where he was allowed by King Horik to build a church and let a priest take up residence.
The girls are impressed that Denmark has always been an open, innovative, visionary, and forward-looking country. This also becomes clear to them at the STATUE OF BISHOP HANS TAUSEN, where they learn that the theologian who lived from 1494-1561 was one of the definitely leading figures of the Reformation in Denmark, after making Martin Luther’s acquaintance in Wittenberg. The journey back in time continues in the HANS TAUSENS HOUSE from the 16th century on the south side of the cathedral, THE OLD TOWN HALL from 1496, and the KANNIKEGÅRDEN. Of course, the girls also take a lot of photos at the FOUNTAIN SCT. CATHARINÆ BRØND.
In THE PEDESTRIAN STREET, the mix of history, modernity, and progress becomes particularly clear for the V-GUIDES. They are impressed by the road, which goes over a dam built as early as 1250 to divide the river into three small cascading streams. As a result, three water mills could be powered at the same time, one of which supplied the area with electricity 120 years ago (1903). Wow, the V-GUIDES think to themselves, and today we are talking about progress through renewable energies, we only need to look into the past here.
The girls also discover the black cobblestones that mark the original location of Nørreport, the former town gate from 1280. Besides, the friends explore what the houses used to look like here. It’s getting mystical and a bit scary now because it’s going to the HEX! MUSEUM OF WITCH HUNT. Here the V-GUIDES learn that Ribe was the home of Denmark’s most famous witch Maren Splidds. But the empowered young women are not scared because of the woman who was burned at the stake here in 1641, but because of the madness that was associated with the witch hunts and can be experienced very vividly and emotionally here in the museum and at some of the original locations.
