As in every January, also this year international media and film fans waited for the announcement of the Oscar nominations. And what can we say, our personal favorite, Poor Things, got 11 Oscar nominations.
THE FAVORITE: POOR THINGS?
This proves one thing: it makes sense to think and act out of the box instead of following the mainstream. With Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos presents us with a wonderful story about the empowerment of a unique creature. A child in the body of a young woman discovers the world and herself in a sensitive, amusing, profound, energetic – and, first and foremost, lovely way.
As we have already reported in detail, Emma Stone dominates this film. It’s hard to believe, but in Poor Things, she increased her already impressive performance many times over.
We are therefore happy about the 11 Oscar nominations and hope that the jury will not be swayed by the fact that Emma already received the Oscar six years ago, back then for La La Land.
THE FAVORITES AMONG THE OSCAR NOMINATIONS
Howsoever, the other Oscar nominations are also absolutely fine. Hence, Poor Things must compete with blockbusters such as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which received 13 Oscar nominations. Moreover, Another major contender is Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with 10 Oscar nominations.
Bradley Cooper’s Maestro with 7, the particularly charming film The Holdovers as well as The Zone of Interest with 5 Oscar nominations each also have good chances. Of course, the most successful film of 2023 is not missing from the list of Oscar nominations, Barbie. It’s nominated for 8 awards.
However, there is a small downside. Because, of course, all the nominated artists played at a high level. In addition, our attention often first falls on the main actors. But it’s the actors in a supporting role who provide them with the stage to showcase their big talent.
And this year Willem Dafoe was inevitably one of those actors. He, as well as Mark Ruffalo, who is nominated for an Oscar, made it possible for Emma Stone to act as magnificently as she does in Poor Things.
Anyway, since Willem Dafoe is a hard-working person who impresses us with a great film almost every year, we hope that this will soon bring his next Oscar nominations and, even better, awards.
We’re excited for the 96th Oscars, which will take place on March 10th at the Dolby Theater at Ovation Hollywood.
