A cheerful farewell party suddenly turns into a fight for survival. Because aliens are launching a devastating invasion. Through the first-person perspective in which Cloverfield was shot, we are literally catapulted into the flight of the small group of young friends.
The special effects are great, but even better are the scenes that look like they were shot on a smartphone. That’s what makes them so authentic and approachable.
Also, the cast is great. Lizzy Caplan performs superbly. You may know her from films like Hot Tub, Girls Club, The Interview, Now You Can See Me 2, True Blood, or Masters of Sex.
Odette Annable Yustman also plays very well, although she only appears in a few scenes. Surprisingly, the pretty American’s career never really took off. Maybe that will change in the future. Never mind, in any case, with Cloverfield in 2008, J. J. Abrams showed that he could be described as the new Spielberg.
The New Yorker has an incredible sense of staging, emotions, depth, tension, etc. No wonder that he has since been able to produce or direct some of the biggest blockbusters.
Apart from the Cloverfield sequels, Star Trek, and Star Wars, Super 8 is a great flick. Here we can see the wonderful Elle Fanning, who has been in front of the camera since she was 3, at the tender age of just 10. Marvelous.
Win the massive action spectacle CLOVERFIELD in 4K (until December 28).
